The core material dictates the "sonic signature" and technical limits of the transformer. Standard Silicon Steel is excellent for higher-level signals and output stages as it has a high saturation flux density, making it resistant to clipping at high volumes. However, for low-level studio or microphone signals, Permalloy is preferred because its significantly higher initial permeability allows the EI48 to maintain high primary inductance at very low signal levels. This results in much lower THD at low frequencies (20Hz -100Hz), where standard steel cores might introduce subtle non-linearities and bass roll-off.
In high-fidelity audio, high inter-winding capacitance can act as a low-pass filter or cause resonant "ringing" at the upper edge of the frequency spectrum. To mitigate this, our EI48 transformers employ sectionalized winding structures where the primary and secondary are split into multiple layers. This technique drastically reduces distributed capacitance, pushing the resonant frequency well above the audible range (typically >50KHz). This ensures a smooth high-frequency roll-off and excellent phase linearity, which is critical for maintaining accurate spatial imaging and "soundstage" in stereo applications.
