A Current Transformer (CT) is a precision instrument designed to produce a reduced current in its secondary winding that is proportional to the AC current in its primary conductor. By scaling down high-amperage primary currents to standardized, measurable levels (typically 1A or 5A), CTs allow for the safe monitoring and protection of electrical systems without requiring high-power metering equipment.

In a current transformer, the primary current is independent of the secondary load. If the secondary circuit is opened, the secondary "counter-MMF" (Magnetomotive Force) disappears. This causes all of the primary current to become magnetizing current, driving the core into deep saturation. This leads to two critical failures: first, it induces extremely high voltage peaks (kilovolts) across the secondary terminals, which can be fatal to personnel and destroy insulation. Second, the massive iron losses from saturation generate intense heat, which can permanently damage the core and melt the windings. Always ensure a load (burden) or a short-circuit link is connected before energizing.
The "s" in Class 0.5s stands for "Special." While both have a 0.5% error limit at 100% and 120% of the rated current, Class 0.5s is specifically calibrated to maintain high accuracy at much lower current levels. For instance, a Class 0.5 CT may have significant error at 5% of its rated current, whereas a Class 0.5s CT is guaranteed to remain within its tight error margins from 20% down to 1% of the rated current. This makes the "s" class indispensable for applications with highly variable loads, such as solar inverters or modern industrial facilities during low-load standby periods.
